₹28,000 Crore Shopping Spree! Women Spend Billions for Husbands’ Long Life — Delhi Alone Sees ₹8,000 Crore Business Boom

National Desk: The Karwa Chauth festival is being celebrated across India today with great enthusiasm. Women make special preparations for this day, and shopping for the festival begins well in advance. This festive season has brought massive profits for shopkeepers across the country. According to estimates, goods worth nearly ₹28,000 crore were sold in markets across India just for Karwa Chauth this year. Delhi alone recorded sales of about ₹8,000 crore.

Rising Business Every Year

Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal stated that this year saw record-breaking sales during Karwa Chauth.

Year-wise Business Figures:

  • 2025 (estimated): ₹28,000 crore
  • 2024: ₹22,000 crore
  • 2023: ₹15,000 crore

These numbers highlight how the business associated with the festival has been growing rapidly year after year.

Most Popular Items This Year

Khandelwal added that the demand for traditional Karwa Chauth items skyrocketed this season. The best-selling categories included:

  • Sarees, lehengas, and festive wear
  • Puja thalis, sieves, and clay pots (karvas)
  • Sweets and gift items
  • Jewelry and cosmetics

In addition, beauty parlors, salons, and mehndi artists witnessed long queues throughout the day. This surge in sales has provided significant employment and income to small artisans and craftsmen across the country.

Massive Crowds in Delhi Markets

Major markets in Delhi — including Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazaar, Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Karol Bagh, and Connaught Place — were jam-packed with shoppers. Traders mentioned that the government’s reduction in GST rates on several items also encouraged consumers to shop more freely.

The Significance of Karwa Chauth

On this auspicious day, women observe a strict fast (nirjala vrat) — abstaining from food and water — praying for the long life, prosperity, and well-being of their husbands. They break the fast only after sighting the moon and taking water from their husbands’ hands. Dressing up, buying new clothes, and adorning themselves with jewelry are integral parts of this beautiful festival of love and devotion.
