Women’s Safety: Awareness, Confidence, and Self-Defense Are the Strongest Shields: Kiran Deoli Uniyal

In today’s time, women’s safety has become a serious social concern. Incidents of violence, robbery, snatching, harassment, kidnapping, and abuse against women continue to surface regularly. Whether in markets, while traveling in buses or trains, in auto-rickshaws, lifts, streets, neighborhoods, or sometimes even within familiar surroundings, many women often feel unsafe. In such an environment, it becomes extremely important for women not to rely solely on others for protection but to become aware, capable, and responsible for their own safety.

As a 53-year-old martial artist, I have spent many years working to raise awareness about self-defense and self-confidence among women. I have been fortunate to have 84 world records registered in my name in the fields of martial arts, fitness, and social service, including 18 Guinness World Records. My experience has taught me that if a woman is mentally strong, alert, and equipped with self-defense skills, she can handle challenging situations far more effectively.

Awareness Is the First Step to Safety

Protection from danger begins with awareness. Risks often increase when we fail to pay attention to our surroundings. Whether walking on the road, traveling in public transport, or being in places like malls, parking areas, or isolated locations, it is very important to remain aware of what is happening around you. Alertness can often help us avoid situations we might not even anticipate.

Do Not Ignore the Signals of Your Sixth Sense

Often, our instincts warn us in advance when something is not right. Women, in particular, tend to have a highly sensitive intuition. If you feel uncomfortable about a person, place, or situation, do not ignore that feeling. Always prioritize your safety and learn to make quick and wise decisions.

Escaping Danger Is Also Wise

Showing bravery in every situation is not always necessary. Sometimes, the smartest decision is simply to leave the place. If someone tries to forcefully take you to a vehicle or an isolated location, never make the mistake of going along with them. Try to move away immediately and seek help.

Self-Defense Is Your Right

If someone attacks you and there is no way to escape, defending yourself physically is both your legal and moral right. Sections 96 to 106 of the Indian Penal Code grant every individual the right to self-defense. In such situations, shouting loudly, attracting public attention, and resisting with all your strength can be crucial.

Confidence Increases Safety

Criminals often target people who appear weak or fearful. Therefore, it is important for women to maintain confidence in their behavior and body language. Instead of walking with your head down, walk alertly and look ahead. If someone makes inappropriate comments or attempts harassment, respond confidently instead of reacting with fear.

Self-Defense Training Is Essential

In today’s world, learning self-defense has become a necessity. Martial arts such as karate, taekwondo, judo, and other self-defense techniques not only strengthen the body but also build confidence. Training programs available in schools, colleges, and fitness centers can be extremely beneficial for women.

Small Safety Tools Can Also Help

Women can also carry small items in their purse that may help in case of emergency. These can include pepper spray, a safety alarm, nail cutters, a small screwdriver, or even a fork. Sometimes everyday items like deodorant, a pen, hairpins, an umbrella, or a handbag can also be used as tools for self-defense. Remember, in self-defense, strength is less important than responding correctly at the right moment.

Conclusion

Ultimately, women’s safety is not only the responsibility of law enforcement but also closely connected to social awareness and personal preparedness. When women are confident, alert, and trained in self-defense, they not only protect themselves but also become an inspiration for other women in society.
