Big Statement by Supreme Court on Delhi-NCR Pollution: ‘Even Masks Are Ineffective Now’
National Desk: The air quality in Delhi-NCR has turned dangerously toxic in recent days. Pollution levels have risen so sharply that breathing has become difficult for residents. Expressing serious concern over the situation, the Supreme Court stated that the current level of pollution is extremely severe and can cause permanent health damage.
Court Advises Lawyers to Appear Virtually
On Thursday, while hearing other matters, a bench of Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice Atul S. Chandurkar commented on the “very poor and severe” pollution levels in Delhi. Justice Narasimha emphasized that the toxic air is capable of causing long-lasting harm to people’s health. Given the current conditions, he suggested, “Fortunately, the Supreme Court has the hybrid hearing option. Most lawyers should appear virtually instead of coming to court.” He also added that the matter would be discussed with the Chief Justice.
‘Risk Has Gone Beyond What Masks Can Protect Against’
During the hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal mentioned that he was taking all precautions by wearing a mask. Justice Narasimha immediately responded, saying that the danger has surpassed what masks can guard against. He pointed out that the Air Quality Index (AQI) has gone far beyond the 300 mark, and precautions need to match the severity of the situation.
Delhi’s Air Remains ‘Very Poor’ to ‘Severe’
There has been no improvement in the air quality of the national capital. Residents continued to face toxic smog on Friday as well. At 8 AM on Friday, Delhi recorded an AQI of 397, which falls under the ‘Very Poor’ category. On Thursday at 4 PM, the AQI was 404, placing it in the ‘Severe’ category. According to CPCB data, several monitoring stations across the capital recorded AQI levels above 400 on Friday—an alarming sign.
