Bollywood Actor Asrani Passes Away at 84
National Desk: Veteran Bollywood actor and director Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, passed away on Monday afternoon (November 20) at Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu, Mumbai. He was 84 years old. His final rites were performed quietly in the presence of close family members and friends at the Shastri Nagar crematorium in Santacruz.
According to his manager Babubhai Thiba, Asrani had been unwell for some time and breathed his last on Monday. The family had decided in advance to keep his passing low-key. Asrani had reportedly told his wife Manju Asrani not to make his death public, which is why his cremation took place without any formal announcement or media attention.
A Legacy of Laughter and Versatility
Throughout his illustrious career spanning over five decades, Asrani appeared in more than 350 films, leaving an indelible mark with his impeccable comic timing and unique acting style. His iconic portrayal of the jail warden in “Sholay”, as well as memorable roles in classics like Chupke Chupke, Aab Lout Chalen, and Hera Pheri, made him a household name across generations.
From Jaipur to the Heart of Bollywood
Born in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Asrani completed his schooling at St. Xavier’s School before pursuing a career in cinema. Rising to fame in the 1970s, he became one of the most beloved comic actors of Indian cinema. During this golden phase, he delivered outstanding performances in films like Mere Apne, Koshish, Bawarchi, Parichay, Abhimaan, Chhoti Si Baat, and Rafu Chakkar.
Even decades later, his role as the eccentric jail warden in Sholay (1975) remains etched in the memories of film lovers. With his passing, Indian cinema has lost not just a legendary performer, but a true entertainer who could make audiences laugh and feel deeply all at once.
