Delhi Flight Delays: Heavy Rain Disrupts Travel, Over 100 Flights Delayed

New Delhi: The national capital witnessed heavy rainfall on Saturday, leading to widespread waterlogging, traffic jams, and flight disruptions, dampening the festive mood of Raksha Bandhan.

According to Flightradar data, at least 105 flights were delayed due to adverse weather conditions. Out of these, 13 were arrivals and 92 were departures at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), throwing travel schedules into disarray.

While there were no large-scale flight cancellations, airlines and airport authorities issued advisories urging passengers to leave early for the airport and keep track of their flight status amid traffic congestion and rain-related delays. Both IndiGo and SpiceJet posted alerts on X (formerly Twitter).

In a statement, Delhi Airport clarified that despite the weather, operations remained largely stable. “All flights at Delhi Airport are currently operating normally. Our on-ground teams are working closely with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth travel experience,” it said.

Several key areas of the city, including Panchkuian Road, Connaught Place, and Mathura Road, experienced heavy waterlogging, resulting in massive traffic snarls. Many underpasses and major roads were submerged, causing long delays for commuters.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the entire Delhi region, predicting moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by strong thunderstorms, particularly in East and Central Delhi throughout the day.

While the downpour brought temporary relief from the heat and improved air quality, it also caused significant disruption to daily life and holiday plans, with residents sharing visuals of flooded streets and delayed journeys on social media.
