Delhi to Turn into a Tulip City: 5.17 Lakh Blooms to Adorn the Capital from Lodhi Garden to Shanti Path

New Delhi: This winter, over five lakh colorful tulip flowers will transform Delhi into a mesmerizing city of blossoms. Of these, NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council) will plant 3.25 lakh tulip bulbs, while DDA (Delhi Development Authority) will plant 1.92 lakh bulbs across roads, roundabouts, and parks under their jurisdictions.

Stretches like Shanti Path, Mandi House, Lodhi Garden, Talkatora Garden, and 11 Murti will soon be adorned with vibrant tulip beds, enhancing the city’s scenic beauty.

For the first time, residents will be able to buy tulip bulbs to beautify their homes, as NDMC will make them available for sale. An NDMC official confirmed that the combined plantation of NDMC and DDA will include 5.17 lakh tulip bulbs this year.

The official further stated that NDMC began local tulip cultivation in 2022, and the initiative has yielded encouraging results. This year, NDMC has successfully developed 50,000 tulip bulbs, with 29,000 produced in the special cultivation chamber at Lodhi Garden and 21,000 at the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT) in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh.

On Tuesday, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena visited NDMC’s Tulip Development and Storage Chamber at Lodhi Garden and praised the initiative to grow tulips locally and reduce dependence on imports. He also directed officials to increase the capacity and production of tulip cultivation chambers, aiming for self-reliance in tulip bulb production within Delhi.

Tulip cultivation in the NDMC area began modestly in 2017–18 with only 17,000 plants, and the number has steadily increased to 3.25 lakh in the previous year. The ongoing success has led to the celebration of the Tulip Festival in New Delhi.

This year, NDMC is also introducing potted tulip sales for the first time, allowing visitors to take home a piece of this floral beauty and add a touch of color to their own spaces.
