Earthquake in Sikkim: Midnight Tremors Shake India, Panic-Stricken Residents Rush Outdoors

National Desk: According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), strong tremors were felt in the Gyalshing region of Sikkim late Thursday night at around 1:09 a.m. The earthquake measured 4.5 on the Richter scale and is classified as a moderate-intensity quake.

The sudden shaking in the middle of the night left residents badly shaken, forcing many to rush out of their homes in panic. As soon as the tremors were felt, chaos ensued, with people urging one another to move to safer places.

The fear was so intense that most residents did not muster the courage to return indoors for several hours and remained outside late into the night. However, there have been no official reports of major damage or loss of life so far. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

Earlier, on Tuesday night at around 9:05 p.m., tremors were also felt in Kolkata and several parts of West Bengal. That earthquake measured 6.0 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was located near Sittwe in Myanmar, about 95 km west of Yenangyaung and approximately 200 km from Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh.

The sudden nighttime tremors triggered panic, particularly among residents living in high-rise buildings in Kolkata, many of whom rushed out to open grounds fearing aftershocks.
