First Tempered Glass Manufacturing Plant Launched in Noida; To Create 4,500 Jobs with ₹800 Crore Investment

Noida. In a major boost to the Make in India initiative, the first tempered glass manufacturing plant has been set up in Noida’s Sector-68. The factory will produce Corning tempered glass, which is widely used to protect screens of electronic devices.

Until now, these glasses were imported from other countries. With domestic production beginning, India takes another step towards self-reliance. On Saturday, Union Minister for Electronics & IT, Information & Broadcasting, and Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the Optimus Infracom plant and emphasized India’s progress in the digital and manufacturing sectors.

Electronics Manufacturing Growing Rapidly

The minister highlighted that in the last 11 years, electronics manufacturing in India has grown sixfold, while exports have increased eightfold. Today, India manufactures mobile phones, laptops, hardware components, and even routers. Currently, around 2.5 million people are directly employed in the electronics sector.

He also stressed that India’s priority is to locally manufacture all laptop and server components. Recently, electronic exports worth ₹3.5 lakh crore were made, while the industry size has now reached ₹11.5 lakh crore. He added that in the near future, products like Gorilla Glass and curved glass will also be produced domestically, along with Made in India semiconductor chips.

₹800 Crore Investment and Employment Boost

Optimus Infracom began tempered glass production with an initial investment of ₹70 crore, creating jobs for over 600 people. Now, the company is set to invest ₹800 crore, aiming to produce 20 crore tempered glass units annually. This expansion will create employment for around 4,500 people.

Huge Market Potential

India’s annual demand for tempered glass is over 50 crore units, representing a market size of more than ₹20,000 crore. Since these were earlier imported, the entry of an Indian company marks a significant shift toward domestic manufacturing.

From Mobile Phones to Tempered Glass

Optimus Infracom has been a key player in India’s electronics industry since 1995, when it launched mobile phones in the country. Over the years, the company has produced earphones and other mobile accessories. Now, it has become the first company in India to venture into tempered glass manufacturing, creating a new chapter in the nation’s electronic ecosystem.
