India Responds to Reports of Death Sentence Against Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina; Stresses Peace and Democracy

Reports emerging from Bangladesh claiming that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been handed a death sentence have triggered the first official response from the Government of India. New Delhi said it is “closely monitoring” the situation and remains firmly committed to the welfare and stability of the people of Bangladesh.

MEA Issues Statement

In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that India has taken note of the reported decision attributed to Bangladesh’s “International Crimes Tribunal” concerning Sheikh Hasina.

The MEA emphasised that as a close and longstanding neighbour, India’s commitment is aligned with “the best interests of the people of Bangladesh.”

The statement further underlined that maintaining peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in Bangladesh is crucial, and India has always supported these fundamental values.

The ministry added that India will continue engaging in constructive dialogue with all stakeholders in Bangladesh to help ensure stability and a democratic environment in the country.
