Microchips to Be Implanted in 1 Million Street Dogs for Digital Monitoring in Delhi; Pet Shops Registration Made Mandatory

New Delhi – After several years, the Animal Welfare Board meeting was held at the Delhi Secretariat, where several important decisions were taken. The government has decided, in collaboration with the UNDP, to implant microchips in nearly 1 million street dogs across Delhi over the next two years.

Support in Rabies Control

Addressing the media after the meeting, Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra said that a Delhi State Action Plan against rabies will be introduced soon. He confirmed that the microchipping initiative, undertaken with UNDP, aims to strengthen rabies control and dog population management across the city.

Mishra added that an Animal Welfare Committee will be formed in every district. Alongside this, awareness campaigns will also be launched in collaboration with the Education Department.

Mandatory Registration for Pet Shops

In another key decision, the minister announced that registration for all pet shops has now been made mandatory. A special monitoring committee will be formed to oversee pet shops and submit periodic reports.

The meeting also raised concern over the rising cases of dog bites. To address this, emphasis will be placed on mass animal vaccination and strengthening the digital monitoring system.

Funding for Animal Welfare

When asked about financial support, Mishra assured that adequate funds will be allocated for animal welfare initiatives to ensure the effective implementation of these measures.
