Now Get Your Voter ID Card in Just 15 Days: Election Commission Overhauls the Process

New Delhi – In a major relief for citizens, especially first-time voters, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has significantly revamped the process of issuing and updating Voter ID cards. Applicants will no longer have to wait for weeks or months — under the new system, a fresh or updated Voter ID card will be delivered within just 15 working days of application completion.
What Has Changed in the New System?
Previously, obtaining a new Voter ID or making corrections — such as updating name, address, photo, or date of birth — could take several weeks or even months. The newly introduced system streamlines the entire process, including data verification, card printing, and delivery, with strict timelines to ensure faster turnaround.
Importantly, the change isn’t limited to new voter registrations. It also applies to those requesting changes or corrections to their existing Voter ID details.
Big Relief for First-Time Voters
Every year, millions of Indian youth turn 18 and become eligible to vote. Under the earlier system, delays in processing often resulted in many first-time voters missing out on being included in the final electoral roll. The new system ensures that first-time applicants receive their Voter ID on time, enabling timely participation in elections.

Election Commission’s Statement
The Election Commission has described this move as a step toward enhancing democratic participation. It aims to make the process more efficient, transparent, and citizen-friendly. The Commission also confirmed that both digital and physical versions of the Voter ID card will be trackable. Dedicated help desks will soon be set up in every district to support the implementation of the new system.
This update is expected to greatly reduce administrative delays and ensure that citizens are empowered to vote without bureaucratic hurdles.
