Protests Erupt in Delhi Against India-Pakistan Cricket Match Screening at Connaught Place Bar

National Desk | New Delhi – A major protest broke out in the heart of the capital on Sunday evening, as demonstrators gathered outside My Square Bar in Connaught Place to oppose the live screening of the ongoing India-Pakistan cricket match.

The protesters argued that at a time when the nation is grappling with terrorism and mourning soldiers killed at the border, some businesses were prioritizing profit over patriotism by broadcasting the match.

Slogans of “Inquilab Zindabad” Shake CP
Carrying placards and waving the tricolor, protesters chanted “Inquilab Zindabad” while raising questions over the government’s and traders’ stance on such events. Videos and images of the protest quickly went viral on social media, amplifying the controversy.

AAP Leader Saurabh Bharadwaj Joins the Chorus
AAP leader and former Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj also weighed in, posting a video of the protest on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote:
“Today in Connaught Place, people are protesting at My Square Bar against the screening of the India-Pakistan match. Profiting from such screenings while our soldiers die in Pahalgam and at the border shows neither the government nor certain traders care. Inquilab Zindabad.”

“Profiteering is Immoral”
According to demonstrators, screening the match in pursuit of commercial gain was deeply unethical in the current national context. They demanded that the government put a stop to such events and called for justice for the families of martyrs.

Congress leader Abhishek Dutt also led a candle march with his supporters, raising slogans against both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Pakistan.

Following the protest, additional police forces were deployed in Connaught Place to maintain order, though the demonstration remained peaceful.

This incident has reignited a heated debate over the fine balance between commerce, entertainment, and national sentiment in the fraught relationship between India and Pakistan.
