Rain Alert: Relief from Scorching Heat Soon – Monsoon to Arrive Early in Delhi, Heavy Showers Forecast Across These States

New Delhi Monsoon Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the southwest monsoon is gaining momentum once again after a brief lull. In a significant development, the monsoon is now expected to reach most parts of northwest India, including the national capital Delhi, well ahead of its normal schedule—possibly by June 25. Typically, Delhi sees monsoon arrival around June 27.

The monsoon made landfall in Kerala on May 24, marking one of its earliest arrivals since 2009, when it had reached Kerala on May 23. Driven by strong low-pressure systems over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, the monsoon advanced rapidly, reaching Mumbai and parts of central Maharashtra by May 29, as well as sweeping through the entire northeast. However, it stalled briefly between May 28 to June 10, before becoming active once again.

Scorching Heat as June Kicks Off With Deficit Rainfall
Due to a lack of rainfall at the beginning of June, large parts of northwest and central India experienced an intense heatwave starting June 8-9, with temperatures soaring well above normal levels. According to IMD forecasts, the monsoon is expected to cover the remaining parts of central and eastern India as well as some areas in the northwest by June 18.

When Will the Monsoon Reach Delhi?
The monsoon is likely to advance into Delhi between June 22 and 23, a few days earlier than the average. This early arrival is expected to bring much-needed relief from the extreme heat that has gripped the region over the past two weeks.

Above-Normal Rainfall Predicted This Season
In a broader seasonal outlook, the IMD has predicted above-normal rainfall across India for the monsoon period from June to September. Importantly, the department has ruled out any significant impact from El Niño conditions, which usually suppress rainfall across the Indian subcontinent.

The IMD estimates a 106% rainfall of the Long Period Average (LPA) for the season, suggesting a strong and well-distributed monsoon that could benefit agriculture and water resources across the country.

Monsoon now accelerating after a temporary pause, India is poised for widespread rainfall in the coming days. As Delhi prepares for its early date with the monsoon, millions across northern and central India can expect relief from the searing summer heat, along with the promise of a robust rainy season ahead.
