Tesla Enters India with Model Y; VinFast Gears Up with VF6 and VF7 Ahead of Festive Season

Mumbai – The Indian electric vehicle (EV) landscape witnessed a significant development today as Tesla officially marked its entry into the country with the launch of its globally popular Model Y SUV. Priced at around ₹60 lakh, the Model Y is set to redefine premium electric mobility in India. Simultaneously, Vietnamese EV manufacturer VinFast has announced its plans to debut in India, eyeing the upcoming festive season with the introduction of two of its key models – the VF6 and VF7 SUVs.
Tesla, the American EV giant led by Elon Musk, has long been teasing its Indian debut. Today, that wait officially ended. The company inaugurated its first Tesla Experience Centre in Mumbai, allowing prospective buyers and EV enthusiasts to explore the Model Y’s cutting-edge technology, minimalist design, and performance-oriented features. The experience centre, equipped with immersive digital displays and dedicated staff, aims to provide a first-hand feel of Tesla’s brand ethos and customer-centric innovations.
The Model Y, which has gained global traction in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia, is known for its long driving range (up to 533 km on a single charge, WLTP), dual-motor all-wheel drive, and Autopilot capabilities. It also offers a spacious cabin, a panoramic glass roof, and access to Tesla’s over-the-air software updates — features that distinguish it in the premium EV space.
On the other side of this exciting development, VinFast, the fast-growing Vietnamese EV brand, is preparing to make a splash in the Indian market with the launch of VF6 and VF7 SUVs. These models are expected to target the mid-size and compact SUV segments, aiming directly at the Indian middle and upper-middle-class consumers who are increasingly considering EVs as viable alternatives to traditional vehicles.
VinFast’s VF6 is likely to be an urban crossover with a practical range, contemporary design, and competitive pricing. Meanwhile, the VF7 will cater to those seeking a more powerful and feature-rich SUV experience. Both models are expected to include connected car features, a modern digital cockpit, and advanced driver-assistance systems.
The timing of VinFast’s announcement is strategic, with the Indian festive season (October–November) known for strong car sales. Industry analysts suggest that VinFast could position its vehicles between ₹30–₹45 lakh, depending on variants and battery configurations. The company is also reportedly exploring local assembly and battery partnerships to remain cost-competitive in India’s price-sensitive market.
As Tesla and VinFast make parallel moves into the Indian market, the competition in the EV segment is set to intensify. For Indian consumers, this could translate into better choices, improved infrastructure, and more innovation in a space currently dominated by homegrown players like Tata Motors and global brands like Hyundai and MG.
The arrival of two international EV players in the same quarter underscores India’s importance as a future EV hub. With government support, expanding charging infrastructure, and growing consumer awareness, India’s EV market is on the cusp of a transformative shift — and today might just be remembered as a pivotal milestone in that journey.
