Heat Wave Alert: Scorching Heat Hits Delhi-NCR; Temperature May Reach 40°C in Next 48 Hours, 125-Year Record at Risk
New Delhi: The weather in Delhi and surrounding regions has turned unusually harsh much earlier than expected this year. By the second week of March, the sun is already blazing intensely, and a severe heatwave has begun affecting the entire NCR region, including Noida. Residents are already struggling with rising humidity and hot winds, making daily life increasingly uncomfortable.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the temperature in Delhi could climb up to 40°C within the next 48 hours, while the minimum temperature may hover around 20°C. This means nights will no longer offer much relief, and people are likely to experience sweaty and uncomfortable conditions even after sunset.
125-Year Record Under Threat: Impact of El Niño
Meteorologists warn that this summer may not be an ordinary one. Experts believe Delhi could break a 125-year-old heat record this season. The primary reason behind this unusual weather pattern is the growing influence of El Niño, which has disrupted normal climate cycles.
With La Niña weakening and El Niño strengthening, temperatures during March, April, and May are expected to remain significantly above normal levels. Additionally, from May to July, residents may face intense humid heat. Another major concern is that El Niño could weaken the monsoon season, meaning rainfall might not provide much relief from the extreme heat.
Weather Outlook for the Next Week
Data from the past 24 hours shows that Delhi’s minimum temperature was recorded 5.1°C above normal. According to IMD forecasts:
- March 10–11: Maximum temperature likely between 37°C and 38°C
- March 12–14: No significant relief expected from the heat
- After March 15: A slight drop in temperature may occur
Currently, westerly winds are blowing across northwest India at around 85 nautical miles, and a western disturbance is also active in the region. Due to these weather systems, temperatures may rise slightly over the next 24 hours before dropping marginally by 2–4°C.
However, both maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain well above normal for the next week, meaning residents of Delhi-NCR will have to cope with this early and intense heatwave for the time being. 🌡️🔥
